    Introduction:

    The Art & Design BTEC is designed to give you the skills you need to move on to higher education or to go straight into apprenticeships or employment within the creative industry. You will gain knowledge & understanding of visual communication through practical processes to help you realise your creative intentions. You will produce a portfolio of art & design work to support your progression beyond the Emmbrook Sixth Form. As the qualification is the equivalent in size to 3 A Levels, this will be your sole area of study for your two years.

    Course Content:

    During the two year course you will cover the following units. They will be achieved through creating a portfolio of work demonstrating a wide range of creative disciplines & contextual understanding:

    • Visual Recording & Communication
    • Critical and Contextual Studies
    • The Creative Process
    • Materials, Techniques & Processes
    • Developing an Art & Design Portfolio
    • Managing a Client Brief
    • Developing & Realising Creative Intentions

    The units of study will give you the opportunity to specialise in specific creative pathways, such as; photography, 3d design, graphic design, illustration, textiles & fine art; painting, printmaking, sculpture.

    The department hold strong links with Reading University & organise practical workshops at the Institute of Education Art Department with their artist-in-residence. This gives you the opportunity to use materials & equipment in a University environment. Gallery visits are organised to help support & inform your work.

    Trips & other costs:

    At the start of the course you will be given the opportunity to purchase art materials through the department. We also arrange a number of trips throughout the 2 year course which in previous years have included; Tate galleries, Pitt Rivers, Natural History Museum, Royal Academy, V&A etc. We organise practical workshops at Reading University, their graduates also visit our art students to show their portfolios & discuss future pathways.

    Career & further study:

    Successful completion of the course enables entry onto an apprenticeship or other employment, Higher National Diplomas & Honours Degrees. Job opportunities include: Graphic Design, Illustration, Fashion, Web/Games Design, Photojournalism, Product Design, Film, Photography, Ceramics, Special Effects, Sculpture & a vast range of other creative areas.
