Overview:
A study of Greek, Roman and Persian history and culture through original sources. The course teaches you to be a critical thinker and how to construct effective arguments – with interesting and engaging content.
Year 1 content:
Greek and Persian Units:
The World of the Hero – The Odyssey. This unit looks at Homer’s tale of Odysseus after the fall of Troy. His journey home and his encounters with monsters, divine beings and magic. We look at how this reflects Ancient Greek society and how it has influenced the culture of the modern world.
The Invention of the Barbarian – a study of Greek identity, conflict with Persia and the representation of Barbarians in Greek literature. We will look at the Achaemenid Empire through a range of archaeological sources and site studies. We will look at fictional barbarians through a study of Medea and the Amazons.
Year 2 content:
Roman Units:
The World of the Hero – The Aeneid. Virgil wrote a glorious mythical history of the origins of Rome, under the instruction of Augustus. We look at how Aeneas fled Troy and came to Italy. His adventure with characters along the journey; including his famous love affair with Dido.
The fall of the Roman Republic looks at the politicians of the Roman Republic – the arguments and rivalry between Cato and Caesar. The events leading up to and around the assassination of Caesar. We take a particular interest in the defence of the Republic by Cicero.

All texts will be provided; however, students may wish to buy their own copies.

Classical Civilisation is a highly regarded A Level, as it provides a very balanced education that develops you as a critical thinker.
