EPQ

Subject: Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Qualification Level: Level 3 (worth half an A Level)

Qualification Duration: 1 year add-on (runs until the end of Term 1 of Year 13)

Exam Board: AQA

Overview:

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an independent research project on a topic of your choice. Instead of following a set syllabus, you decide on a question or idea that fascinates you, plan your project, carry out the research and produce either a written report or an artefact. It is a stand-alone Level 3 qualification that is worth half an A Level and up to 28 UCAS Tariff points, and it is an excellent way to show universities and employers that you can work independently.

The EPQ is an add-on course. You select it as your 4th option alongside your other three courses, and you will then be asked to complete a supplementary application.

What you will produce

  • A production log recording how you plan, research, develop and review your project
  • A final product: either a written report or an artefact, performance or other outcome, depending on your project
  • A presentation of your project to a non-specialist audience

How it is assessed

The EPQ is 100% non-exam assessment, so there are no written exams. Your project is assessed on four objectives: managing your project, using resources, developing and realising your project, and reviewing it. It is marked in school and moderated by AQA.

Year 1 content:

The course begins in Year 12 with a taught element, where you will be taught the skills needed to carry out an independent project:

  • Planning and managing a project
  • Finding, evaluating and using reliable sources
  • Referencing and avoiding plagiarism
  • Critical thinking and analysis
  • Presenting your work

You will choose an area of interest, draft a title and aims for your project for approval, and then begin planning and researching with the support of a supervisor.

Year 2 content:

The course runs until the end of Term 1 of Year 13, when you will:

  • Complete your research and produce your final report or artefact
  • Deliver your presentation to a non-specialist audience
  • Complete your production log, including a review of your project and your own learning

Trips and other costs:

There are no compulsory trips. Any costs will depend on the project you choose, for example printing, materials for an artefact or travel to carry out research.

Career and further study:

The EPQ develops independent research, critical thinking, time management, referencing and presentation skills, all of which are valued by universities and employers. It gives you something distinctive to discuss in your UCAS personal statement and at interview, and some universities may make a lower offer to students who achieve a high grade in the EPQ.

It combines well with any combination of A Levels or vocational courses, and is particularly useful if you would like to explore a topic related to the degree or career you want to pursue.
